Pipeline Safety Stakeholder Engagement

Pipeline Safety Stakeholder Engagement

At National Fuel, our highest priority is the safety of our customers, employees, and the communities we serve. National Fuel operates approximately 25,000 miles of transmission, gathering and utility pipelines, including service lines, which serve approximately 749,000 customers in Western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania.  We are proud of our safety record but are experienced enough to know that we can never become complacent. Therefore, we have worked hard to establish a culture that embraces continuous improvement in all aspects of safety.

To ensure the safety of our system, National Fuel employs a Pipeline Safety Management System (PSMS) based on the American Petroleum Institute Recommended Practice 1173.  A Safety Management System provides a systematic approach to managing safety, including the processes, policies, and procedures an organization uses to direct and control its activities.

One of the essential elements of PSMS is stakeholder engagement, which includes communicating pipeline safety information to community members who live, work, and play in proximity to our pipelines and facilities including landowners, first responders, public officials, regulatory agencies, excavators, and the public.  An important component of stakeholder engagement is encouraging and maintaining two-way communication.

See our Corporate Responsibility Report and Pipeline Safety page to learn more about our pipeline safety programs and performance, including our program for stakeholder engagement.
